The picture

A king sits in profile on a stone throne set on a stone platform, turned sideways with his feet pointing away — the posture of somebody who has sat down without committing to it.

Behind him an orange panel carries lions and salamanders. The salamanders on the panel are drawn as closed rings, each with its tail in its mouth.

His robe is red and his cloak is patterned with more of them. The staff in his right hand is in leaf and his hand rests on it without gripping.

On the platform at his feet, a small black salamander. That one is not a ring. It is running.

Upright

Vision that others follow because it is going somewhere in particular.

This is the suit at its most effective: energy that has acquired a direction and can hold one for long enough to matter. The Knight charges, the Queen draws, and the King decides — and other people arrange themselves around the decision without being asked to.

The turned posture is the detail to keep. He is not settled on that throne. Authority in this suit is restless by nature and has no appetite whatever for administration.

The salamanders on the chair are closed

The ones worked into the panel behind him have their tails in their mouths. That is the old figure for something perfected: a closed circuit, complete, requiring nothing further.

The live one on the floor by his boot is open, and moving.

Set those two against each other and the card says something quite precise about this kind of leadership. The finished version — the vision as it will be described afterwards, sealed, self-sufficient, complete — is upholstery. It is on the furniture. The actual thing is small, on the ground, and has not stopped moving, and he is sitting sideways because he is going to have to follow it.

Reversed

Vision without hearing. Leadership that stopped taking input, generally because it was right often enough for long enough to stop checking, and now cannot tell the difference between disagreement and disloyalty.

Ambition can also run on ego and grow impatient with detail. The direction stays genuinely compelling; the execution is left to whoever is following, and the following gets steadily more expensive.

Commonly mistaken for

Dominance. He is persuasive rather than coercive, and people follow this card because they want to. Read as force it quietly becomes the reversed card without ever turning over.

The other common error takes it as final authority. The living wand and the salamander on the floor say otherwise. This is still fire, and fire does not settle.

In a reading

The advice reading: pick a direction and say it out loud, where other people can hear it, which is the step that turns the Two of Wands into this one.

As a person, whoever's certainty is currently doing the organising. With the Emperor the pair sets structure against momentum, and it is worth knowing which of the two a situation is short of.
