The picture
A figure stands on a rocky rise with his back fully to us, in a green cloak over a red and gold robe, a circlet in his hair. Three leafing staves are planted around him and his right hand rests on the one at his shoulder.
Below and beyond, a gold expanse of water. The sky above it is the same gold. There is barely a horizon.
Out on that water are ships. They are extremely small.
Upright
Something committed to, and now under way without him.
The turned back is the card. We are not shown his face because his attention is entirely on what he has already sent out — this is the position after the decision, when the thing has left your hands and is moving under its own power.
It is expansion of the particular kind that comes from having dispatched something. Trade, a partnership, an application, a message that cannot be unsent. The reach has been extended and nothing has come back yet.
The ships are specks
Look at how little of the card they occupy. Three or four marks on the water, smaller than the leaves on the staves beside him, on a sea the same colour as the sky.
That scale is deliberate and it is unkind in a useful way. What he has launched is already almost too far off to make out. He can see that it exists and he can see roughly where it is, and he cannot see how it is doing, whether it is loaded, or whether it is coming back.
The dissolved horizon does the rest. There is no line in this picture where the water stops and the distance starts. Nothing about the situation can be measured from where he is standing, and the card puts him there anyway, with his hand on a stick, watching.
The three staves are planted, not held. He drove them into the rock at some point and they are standing on their own — the first thing in this suit that did not need a hand on it, and the reason he can afford to stand there with one arm out and watch.
Reversed
Waiting on ships that are late. Progress slower than it was promised to be, and the delay starting to raise a question about the plan rather than the timetable.
A horizon can also be watched until the watching replaces departure. The ships turn out to be somebody else's, the view becomes a habit, and the three staves stop being equipment and start being furniture.
In a reading
The thing progresses on its own momentum, in an outcome position, and the reader's job in the meantime is smaller than they would like it to be. As counsel: patience with something already committed to.
Read as literal travel it usually misfires — more often the movement belongs to something the reader sent rather than to the reader. It also gets called passive waiting, and standing still because the next move is not yours is a different situation from having no next move. Among pentacles the return becomes material and countable.
