The picture
A mason stands on a bench inside a church, tools in hand, working at the stone of an arch. Three coins are set into the tracery above him.
Two figures stand below and look up. One is a monk in a habit holding a sheet of plans. The other wears a patterned robe and is pointing at them.
All three of them are talking.
Upright
Skill recognised, and work that exists because more than one party wanted it.
This is the collaboration card and it is specific about the shape of the collaboration: somebody can do the work, somebody commissioned it, somebody wrote the specification, and all three are in the same building at the same time.
That is rarer than it sounds and it is why the card reads as good news. Most work goes wrong in the gaps between those three people.
The mason is standing on the bench
He is higher than either of the men holding the plans, and he got there by climbing onto a piece of furniture.
Nothing about his elevation is ceremonial. He is up there because that is where the stone is, and the effect is that the two commissioning figures have to look upward to talk to him. For the length of this conversation, the person doing the work has the floor.
That inversion is the card's quiet argument and it does not last. The bench comes away when the arch is finished. What the picture catches is the specific window in any project when the maker's judgement outranks everybody's plans, because the plans have run out and the material is right there.
The three coins are set into the tracery of the arch itself, above everybody's heads. They are not payment on a table. They are part of the building, already installed, and the conversation underneath is about work that has passed the point of being hypothetical.
Reversed
The collaboration failing. Effort going in without agreement about what is being built, discovered around the point where it becomes expensive to change.
Good craft can also go into something not worth the craft. The competence entirely intact, the direction absent, and nobody in the room willing to be the one who says so.
Commonly mistaken for
A solo achievement. There are three figures in this card on purpose, and reading it as personal recognition loses the half where other people were required.
And it is read as an early stage. This is the second act — the apprentice from the Eight has been paid and is now building the real thing, with an audience.
In a reading
The work is seen and continues, in an outcome position, and continuation is the part that matters. In an advice position: get the plans into the same room as the person building, which is nearly always the intervention this card is recommending.
With the Eight, practice and commission. With the Ten, the work turns into something inherited by people who were not there.
