The picture
A queen sits in profile on a carved stone throne in an open meadow. She holds a large coin in both hands, resting it in her lap, and she is looking down at it.
An arbour of roses arches over the top of the card. Red flowers grow at both sides, a stream runs behind, and mountains stand in the distance.
The throne is carved with fruit, and with a goat's head.
At the bottom right of the picture, in the grass a few feet away, a rabbit sits upright and does not move.
Upright
Care expressed as provision — practical, and not in the least sentimental.
She holds the coin the way somebody holds a thing that is alive. That is the card: material matters treated as important because of what they keep going, rather than for what they are.
This is competence at the level of a household or a team. Money managed, bodies fed, conditions maintained so that other people can get on with whatever they are doing. Most of it is invisible and all of it is noticed the week it stops.
The rabbit has not run
Of everything Pamela Colman Smith could have put in that corner, she chose the most easily startled animal available, and drew it sitting still a few feet from a throne.
Rabbits leave. That is the entire behavioural repertoire of a rabbit in the presence of something large. This one is upright, alert, and staying, which means that whatever is happening on that throne has been happening long enough and quietly enough for a wild animal to have stopped counting it as a threat.
There is no better available proof of the card. Not what she says about herself and not what anybody says about her — a nervous creature has decided this is safe ground, on the evidence, over time.
Reversed
Provision without rest. Everything managed on everybody else's behalf and nothing whatever left over, with the shortfall invisible because the delivery has not faltered.
There is also the anxiety about money and the body running underneath all of it. The care still arrives, on time, and the ease has gone out of it — and nobody notices, because noticing would require the arriving to stop.
As a person
Whoever is quietly keeping the situation supplied. It is read as maternal by default, and it names a function that a great many people perform without any of the usual associations attaching.
It also gets read as domesticity in the small sense. What the card describes is resource management, and it scales from a kitchen to a company without changing shape.
In a reading
In an advice position: attend to the practical conditions before anything else, because nothing else will hold without them. In an obstacle position it can mean the reader is supplying everybody and is not on the list.
With the Empress, growth against provision. With the King, tending against holding.
