The picture

A young figure stands in a ploughed field, holding a coin up in both hands at about eye level and studying it.

The furrows run away behind him. Trees stand at the edge of the field and there is open country beyond.

The ground has been prepared and nothing has been planted in it.

Upright

Beginning by learning, with nothing yet to show.

The Page of Pentacles is study of the practical kind. A course, an apprenticeship, a skill taken up seriously, a first job where the point is what gets learned rather than what gets paid.

He is holding the coin the way you hold something you have been given and have not yet worked out. Not clutching it, not spending it, not showing it to anybody — turning it over at eye level, in a field, on his own.

The field is ploughed and empty

Every furrow in this picture has been cut and there is no crop in any of them.

That is where the card sits, and it is a specific and often uncomfortable stage. The preparation is genuinely done. Real work went into that ground, by somebody, possibly by him. And there is nothing growing, because nothing has been put in yet, and the season for putting it in is not depicted.

An empty ploughed field looks like failure to anybody walking past and looks like readiness to the person who cut the furrows. Both readings are available in the picture, and which one a reader takes tends to say more about them than about the card.

He is the only Page in the deck holding the suit's object in two hands. The others hold a cup, a wand or a sword one-handed, with the spare hand on a hip or a staff. This one has committed both, which is either seriousness or the grip of somebody who has not been given anything before.

Reversed

Study with no ground under it. Plans that stay plans, courses begun and set aside, learning that never gets near anything real and is therefore never tested.

There is also the attention that wanders before anything finishes. The coin put down for a different coin, repeatedly, with each switch entirely justified at the time.

As a person

Anybody in the stance of taking a subject seriously from the beginning. It is read as a literal student, usually a young one, and the card is about a posture toward a thing rather than an age — people arrive here at fifty, holding the coin exactly the same way.

It also gets read as naivety. He is holding it correctly and looking at it carefully. Inexperience and incompetence are different conditions and this card only depicts the first.

In a reading

Asked for advice, it says this: learn it properly before doing it quickly, which nobody wants to hear and which this card will keep saying. In an outcome position something practical begins, slowly, and slowly is part of the offer rather than a defect in it.

With the Eight, study becomes practice. With the Ace, the offer is being examined rather than accepted.
