The picture
Night, and heavy snow falling against a black sky. Two figures walk through it below a lit stained-glass window set high in a wall. The window shows five coins among leaves and flowers, gold and warm.
One figure is on crutches, head bandaged, one leg bound. A bell hangs at his throat. The other is barefoot in the snow, wrapped in a torn shawl, head down.
Neither of them looks up.
Upright
Hardship, with help standing closer than it is being noticed.
The window is the whole card and it is easy to miss on first reading — which is exactly the point, because it is directly above them and they walk straight past it.
This is material difficulty in its cold, practical form: money, health, work, shelter. What the composition adds is the specific cruelty of exclusion. Being outside something while standing beside it is a different injury from simply lacking it.
He is wearing a bell
The man on crutches has a bell at his neck.
That is a leper's bell, and its purpose is not decorative. It is worn so that other people are warned before he arrives. He is not merely poor and he is not merely unlucky: he has been formally set outside, and he is carrying the instrument of his own exclusion because he was required to.
Which changes what the lit window means. It is not simply warmth that has gone unnoticed. It is an institution with the lights on, and one of the people in the snow is wearing a device issued to keep him away from it.
The card is harder than its usual reading and considerably more accurate about how exclusion actually works. Nobody outside needs to be told the help is there.
The five coins in the window are arranged in the same pattern that the Tree of Life takes on the Ten of Pentacles. The design of a whole prosperous household is in the glass above their heads, lit from inside, at night, in the snow.
Reversed
The door found. Circumstances easing, or help finally asked for and given, and usually less dramatically than the asking felt.
Isolation can also be maintained long after the help became genuinely available. The window noticed and still not approached, for reasons that were sound at the time they were formed and have not been reviewed since.
Commonly mistaken for
Poverty and nothing else. The card describes exclusion at least as much as lack, and a good many people standing in this picture have money.
People also read it as a rebuke for not asking. The two of them are in the snow at night with a bell. Whatever kept them out there is real, and this card does not blame them for it.
In a reading
In an obstacle position it names genuine hardship, and it is worth saying so before offering anything else. As advice it points at the window — help that exists, is close, and has not been approached.
With the Six the pair is need and giving, and the Six is not as kind as it looks. With the Ten, outside a house against inside one.
