The picture
Ten cups are set into a rainbow arching across the top of the card. Below it a couple stand with their arms around each other's waists and their outer arms raised toward it, backs to us.
To the right, two children hold hands and dance in a circle. Neither of them is looking up.
Behind, a river, a stand of trees, and a small house with a red roof on the hillside. The house is some way off.
Upright
Belonging, in the ordinary and unspectacular sense.
This is the suit's completion, and it is domestic instead of triumphant. Not passion, not a wish granted, not an arrival: the settled condition of being among people who are yours, at an unremarkable hour, in a field.
The rainbow is doing something specific. It is the only extraordinary object in the picture and it is drawn as scenery, above a landscape that is otherwise entirely everyday — a river, some trees, a house too far away to see into.
The children have not looked up
They are dancing in a ring, holding hands, facing each other. There is a rainbow of ten golden cups directly overhead and it has not occurred to either of them to notice it.
That is the best detail in the card and it is the whole definition of the thing being described. Security is the extraordinary arrangement overhead going unremarked by the people it is for. The adults can see it, and have their arms up, and know what they are looking at. The children have never had to know.
Which also says who did the work. Somebody in this picture is aware of what is being held in place, and it is not the people benefiting most from it.
Reversed
The picture kept up. Harmony maintained for appearance, with real and continuous effort, by people who know exactly what they are maintaining and how long it has been since it was true.
A sound one can also be strained by whatever nobody is saying. The arrangement intact, the affection genuine, and something in it going unaddressed for long enough to start setting.
Commonly mistaken for
A conventional family. The card is about belonging, and belonging takes shapes the 1909 picture did not draw and had no way of drawing. Reading the composition as a prescription and not an example is the fastest way to make this card useless to half the people who draw it.
A second reading takes it as an endpoint. Ten is the end of the numbered suit and not the end of the story; four court cards follow it, and so does an ordinary Tuesday.
In a reading
The suit's clearest yes in an outcome position. As advice it points at the people instead of the plan, which is usually the correction being asked for.
With the Four of Wands both are homecoming, one public and one private. With the Five the contrast does the work: what was lost, set against what was kept.
